Description
This is a small paperback booklet entitled, HISTORY AND RHYMES OF THE LOST BATTALION written by “Buck Private” McCollum that remains in complete and excellent condition. It was first published in 1919 with this copy being published in 1929. The front and back covers are of thin brown cardboard made to appear like leather. All the interior pages are present and filled with information of the Lost Battalion's heroic stand from October 2nd to October 8th, 1918 when surrounded and cut off by superior German forces. It gives a complete description of the battle action with maps, photographs and eye witness accounts. In addition, the booklet is filled with anecdotes and description of soldier life at the front that includes Bully Beef, Cooties, Rain-Rain-Rain, Gassed, Oui Oui Mon Cher, Fighting Mad, Over the Top, The Medal, My Pals and many more. These anecdotes are accompanied by cartoon caricatures and sketches by the author himself. There is a fitting tribute that is accompanied by photos of the battalion's officers, Captain Nelson M. Hollerman, Major George G. McMurtry and Lieutenant Colonel C. W. Whittlesey, the Commanding Officer of the Lost Battalion. All three of these officers were awarded the Medal of Honor for the heroic actions during the battle. The citations are unbelievable but aptly deserving of our nation's highest military decoration for combat action. There are photos of the Battalion itself and other individuals, with photos of some of the DSC winners and other notable soldiers. This is a very comprehensive and concise history of The Lost Battalion that is filled with a wealth of information and a true feeling for soldier's life during the Great War.3844
