Howard Finster
He was a self-taught folk artist. Howard Finster was a Baptist minister who believed God had called upon him to spread religious teachings through his artwork.
Born in rural Alabama, Finster was a tent revivalist who also worked in bricklaying, bicycle repair, carpentry, and other trades to support his family. Beginning in the 1960s, Finster transformed the land behind his house in Summerville, Georgia, into an environment he called Paradise Garden, conceived as a celebration of human invention.
In 1976, while repainting a bicycle, he noticed a paint smudge on his finger in the shape of a human face; he believed this to be a sign from God instructing him to paint religious artworks.
He produced over 46,000 works of art featuring fantastic landscapes, historical and pop cultural figures like George Washington and Elvis Presley, adorned with handwritten Bible verses.
He also created album covers for the Talking Heads and R.E.M.
