    History note
The 9th (Service) Battalion, Duke of Wellington's (West Riding) Regiment, was formed at Halifax in September 1914 as part of the 52nd Brigade, 17th (Northern) Division, under the K2 'New' Army Group. In July 1915, the Brigade landed at Boulogne-sur-Mer for service on the Western Front and saw active service there for the rest of the war. The owner of the jacket, Captain Kenneth Beaumont Mackenzie, was promoted from Private to Second Lieutenant in March 1915, transferring from the 1st West Riding Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps, to the 7th Battalion, West Riding Regiment. At some point he transferred to the 9th (Service) Battalion, and in August 1915 he disembarked for France, where he remained until the end of the war. He took part in the Battle of Arras in April 1917 as well as the retreat from Cambrai in March 1918, when he was Officer in Command of D Company. Mackenzie was Gazetted for the Military Cross on 26 July 1918, the entry reading: 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty while in command of a company, when it was owing to his good leadership that, in spite of an intense bombardment, his command was withdrawn from a dangerous and exposed position with very few casualties. He set a fine example of courage and greatly inspired his men.' Mackenzie's private papers, which include letters, photographs, drawings and his notebook in which he had drawn several trench diagrams, are held by Documents under Documents.7116.
